The Scooter Project is a joint venture of the Post Morrow Foundation, the South Bay Scooter Club and the Long Island Maritime Museum. The goal of this project is to document the early history of ice sailing and in particular the development of the Scooter on the Great South Bay of Long Island.

An early objective of this project is to preserve much of the unpublished information on early ice boating through the use of taped interviews with bayman, sailors, boat builders and in general those individuals that recall the early years of ice-boating.

In addition to the oral histories, the project continues to perform extensive research of the printed media using the Internet, local and regional libraries and museums. Over 130 historic articles describing the development of the Scooter, some going back to the late 1890’s have been digitized and are available to view as PDF files. Additional examples of this research effort is the reproduction of the original Hermus Scooter plans, the preservation of original Scooter sail plans from W. Mills Sail maker Greenport and through the generosity of the Post Morrow Foundation the digitalization of original Scooter photographic plates from the H. B. Fullerton Collection. These photographs may be viewed on the South Bay Scooter Club web site. The development of this web site, which was funded by the Scooter Project, brings together both the historical and current activities of Scooters and Scooter men.
